Some verses from Psalm 115
Our God is in the heavens; he does whatever he pleases.
Their idols are silver and gold, the work of human hands.
Those who make them are like them; so are all who trust in them. (v. 3, 4, 8)
The heavens are the Lord’s heavens, but the the earth he has given to human beings.
The dead do not praise the Lord, nor do any that go down into silence.
But we will bless the Lord from this time on and forevermore.
Praise the Lord! (v. 16-18)
There’s something in these verses about the static nature of idols vs. the dynamic nature of God. There’s also something about the powerful opportunity–through LIFE on earth–to bless the Lord.
Those who make idols are like them–eyes that can’t see, ears that can’t hear. The dead can’t bless God.
For me this draws a contrast then–God was not MADE by humans, so God is not like those who trust God. But at the same time, God has given earth to us and through this earth we have the opportunity to bless God. I can’t quite articulate the nugget in there, but it’s in there.
I think there’s something here about trusting in an idol we make that is like us, versus blessing the God who made us and gives us the earth. Maybe something about who’s reflecting who?
An idol reflects us.
We reflect God.
